It's a "Fig" Deal

My wonderful wife comes from a family with deep roots in the South, especially middle Alabama. Her aunt Elise still lives in the farm home that was built by a great - great - etc. - grandfather in Carlowville, Alabama in 1837.

Betty spent a part of each of her growing up summers visiting her aunt and two cousins, Bob and Calhoun, on the farm.

One of her favorite memories is a big fig tree/bush that grew to the side of the farm house. Each summer the figs would ripen while she was there and they would have fresh figs over vanilla ice cream. She also had vanilla ice cream and fresh cantaloupe, but that's another story.

Betty has always wanted her own fig tree/bush and, last Sunday morning at the Corrales Growers Market, we bought a small fig bush from the "Fig Man."

Here's a picture of our new baby in all her glory:

So, in three or four summers you're all invited over for fresh figs and vanilla ice cream. Our treat!

Today is August 5 and if today is your Birthday then you share your day with: Kajol (actress from India), Adam Yauch (guitarist - "Beastie Boys"), Patrick Ewing (NY Knicks center), Maureen McCormick (actress - Marcia Brady on "The Brady Bunch"), Loni Anderson (actress - "WKRP in Cincinnati"), Neil Armstrong (astronaut - first man on the moon), John Huston (director - "African Queen"), Selma Diamond (actress - "Night Court"), and Thomas Lynch (signer of the Declaration of Independence).

Hey,

Sounds good to me - I've never had fresh figs! Be sure we get an updated picture next summer.

Do you know what pollinates a fig? Commercially they use little wasps. We have figs too, but we don't like them much. I may have to give them another try since Betty likes them.

Figs like Fig Newtons? ;) I think it's awesome her wish is coming true. Nice story.

If we don't like the figs, will you have any chocolate sauce?

Mark, there are many different kinds of figs. Some are sweeter than others. This should be one of the sweet kind.

Michelle, of course you can have chocolate. It's one of the basic food groups.

Jane, pictures will come.

I saw an ad in the ABQ Craigst List from the Fig Man! What a small world. I almost contacted him for a fig bush, but I'm afraid the poor thing wouldn't survive in our mountain environment.
Our peach, apricot and apple trees havent produced this year at all.

And we have rarely had any temps above 80 degrees this summer! And at night it dips down to the low 50's. We've only used our Swamp Cooler maybe 5 times all summer....in New Mexico. gah!

I would be honored if you invited us over for some fig-topped vanilla ice cream one day.

By the way, the kids and I are planning a letterboxing foray to Corrales in a week or two. Maybe we can get together for a visit?

I'd love to meet Gletta in Morgunn in person :)
(And you and Betty, too! hehe)
