Book Report 3 - For Love of a Horse

We have reviewed several books that we have learned from - all the Mark Rashid books and "True Horsemanship Through Feel" by Bill Torrance.

Today we want to share a book that's just a good read. The author is Max Evans. Max is probably in his early 80's by now. He lived in New Mexico all his life, through the depression and World War II. His grandmother was a full-blood Cherokee. He worked as a cowboy on several ranches as he was growing up. He is quoted as saying "life is both ridiculous and fun." One critic said of him, "he's the kind of guy you can take anywhere --- and still be ashamed of him."

He's an accomplished artist as well as author. Probably his most famous book is "Rounders." "For Love of a Horse" is his newest book. It contains new stories about some of his boyhood experiences with horses as well as stories he wrote for publication in the 80's of special horses he knew. Additionally, there are quite a few pictures of Max and his friends on horseback as well as some of Max's artwork.

Each chapter is a complete story so it's a good book to pick up to read for awhile and be able to put it down and be satisfied.

If you're looking for a good, late summer read, we recommend "For Love of a Horse."

Today is July 27 and if today is your Birthday then you share your day with: Alex Rodriguez (shortstop for the New York Yankees), Maureen McGovern (singer - "The Morning After"), Betty Thomas (actress - "Hill Street Blues"), Bobby Gentry (singer - "Ode to Billy Joe"), Jerry Van Dyke (brother of Dick Van Dyke, comedian, "Coach"), Norman Lear (producer - "All in the Family") and Stanislav Binicki (painter).
